Spanning from the Mississippi River to the Boundary Waters, the Mesabi Trail features over 150 miles of paved pathways, making it a unique experience in the United States. As you journey through the forests of northeast Minnesota, you’ll encounter picturesque lakes, creeks, and ponds, alongside vast red pits from former iron ore mines, now transformed into vibrant emerald waters. Expect to see a variety of native wildlife along your route.

The trail connects 28 communities, providing opportunities to explore local attractions, delve into the area’s history, and discover its mining and logging heritage. Don’t miss the chance to savor local dishes such as sarma, pasties, or potica.

Once completed in 1-2 years, the trail will stretch nearly 165 miles, positioning it among the longest paved trails in the country, with only two sections left to finish.

During the summer, activities like biking, hiking, walking, and inline skating are popular. In winter, you can enjoy fat tire biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and winter hiking, although the trail isn’t groomed for these winter sports. Some areas also allow snowmobile access.

The trail is conveniently accessible from various points, with amenities and services available throughout, including lodging and campgrounds. Remember, a Wheel Pass is required for anyone aged 18 and older using wheels on the trail.
